Durable Solutions for IDPs
Client: UN-Habitat
Location: Burkina Faso
2023 - 2024
Humanitarian and development organisations are increasingly seeking to develop Durable Solutions for IDPs (internally displaced persons). In other words, forms of support that assist and accompany them so that they no longer have “any specific assistance and protection needs and can enjoy their human rights without discrimination on account of their displacement”.
This evaluation looked at the impact of a support project by UN-Habitat for people displaced from the north of Burkina Faso to several small towns in the North and Sahel regions.
The project aims to achieve sustainable local integration in areas where internally displaced persons take refuge. To achieve this, it is developing an integrated approach (all basic services are taken into account: housing, water, sanitation, health education, access to employmeent and economic opportunitées, etc.) and a localised approach (the project focuses on an urban area undergoing rapid urbanisation and supports the local population and authorities in its development).
This evaluation is particularly important because the project is the first of its kind in the Sahel region and can therefore provide lessons learned and recommendations for other similar initiatives in Burkina Faso and other countries.
